WHAT’S HAPPENING AT EPBC…
.
OPENING DAY.
What a great start to the season! The opening Day was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. A number of new members were welcomed. It was good to see our club’s fine uniforms on display.
Bowls Canterbury representatives Lorraine McLeod (General Manager) and Sharon Wilson
(President) were present. Kelvin Scott received a special award from Bowls Canterbury for his representative achievements last season. Lorraine opened the season and then the first bowls of the season were delivered by life member Murray Scott (kitty) and Bev Morel (bowl).
The weather was fine, the food went down well (thanks to all who produced great salads)
and the bowls roll-up enjoyed. The green was superb – thanks so much to Kelvin.
Special thanks to Pam Rowley, Mary Ann and David re their work on setting up the venue and the food and for David for running the bar.
And, of course to Tim and crew for the barbecue.
GREENS.
Kelvin Scott, our greenkeeper, reports that green 1, while it has good cover, is
softish with some disease normal for this time of year. Green 2 is a bit slow
with growth so will be a few weeks behind green 1. Green 2 will be open no later than 7th October. Kelvin’s wish is to provide the club with two good greens and will be playing /allocating club championship games etc on both greens as directed by him. Please continue to follow Kelvin’s directions as to whether the greens are open and as to which green/rinks are to be played on.
See the club website and also the boards/markers at the club for directions.
Any doubt or questions, please phone Kelvin (see handbook), or in his absence, Don Baker, our green superintendent.
HANDBOOKS.
Club handbooks are now available from the club. They contain a detailed club/centre programme and much more and will provide the answers to a lot of questions from club members. Many thanks to David, Lesley, Mary Ann and Tim for their hard work in getting the handbook done – a mammoth task every year.
Bowls Canterbury handbooks are also available from the club and contain a great deal of information for those playing in Bowls Canterbury events and wanting to play in tournaments at other clubs?
UNIFORMS.
Lesley Campbell is dealing with uniforms and any enquiries need to go to her by email, especially for those who require additional uniform items. Her contact islezcampbell13@gmail.com Les reports that  she has recently placed a uniform order but as the club does not carry a lot of stock, she needs to know what you require and sizes.
Delivery times are:
Polo shirts – 4 weeks
Shorts/long trousers – 8 weeks
Jackets and vests – 12 weeks
Les reports that she is currently sorting uniforms for our new members and that, subject to stock on hand, these will be available once the membership subscription is paid. Les will email you individually when your order is ready to collect.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS.
Entry sheets are up in the Clubrooms for club championships.
Entry sheets are up in the Clubrooms for all events, including the 1-2 year and 1-5 year singles.
Closing date of 5th October for most events. Great to see the large number of entries so far.
SCHOOL BOWLS.
I have made the initial contact this year with St Andrews, following our successful involvement last year.  They would want us to run a limited programme before Christmas and a full programme after Christmas, this to possibly involved some school championship events and the like.
Before Christmas, the dates for Year 10’s are:
Thursday 24th October 1.30 – 2.15
Friday 25th October 2.30 – 3.15
Thursday 31st October 1.30 – 3.15
And for school boarders:
Tuesday 19th November 6.30 – 7.30
Thursday 21st November 6.30 – 7.30
Erica, from Bowls Canterbury, will be helping with most of these dates. We will need some volunteers as well and, if you are able help with any of the above dates, can you please phone David.
BOWLS CANTERBURY INTERCLUB.
Thanks to all of you who helped by filling out your forms. The selectors have now met and the club has put in its entries for interclub pre Christmas. We now await the draws (and selections), with the first event up being Saturday interclub on 12th October.
Any queries, please contact the relevant selectors in the handbook.
For the 1-5 year group, please contact Phil Smith and Jamie Wagner who are ably looking after this group this year.
COACHING.
The coaching sessions on Wednesdays are now underway with an emphasis on new and less experienced bowlers. Great to see a good turnout last Wednesday which kept Pam Rowley and Emily Belton, our coaches, very busy. Just turn up at 5.30 if you want club coaching, or also contact one of the coaches in the handbook if you want an individual session.
HONOURS BOARDS.
Great to see these up and many thanks to Tim and Don for their hard work on behalf of the club.
SOLAR PANELS.
The club has recently installed these after approval from the executive. Great to see this happen.
NO 2 GREEN.
This major work has just about been completed. Many thanks to the contractors and to Tim, Don and Kelvin for their hard work on behalf of the club. It is looking great so far.
NEW MEMBERS.
Applications are still coming in and I intend to publish a full list of new members in the next newsletter. Welcome to all and the club hopes that you enjoy your time here. Don’t hesitate to ring or email the appropriate person named in the handbook if you have any queries.
Great to see many of you attending our club night on Fridays from 4.30 p.m.
NGAIO MARSH (ELMWOOD PARK) DRAWN FOURS.
This event took place on Saturday 28th September in fine weather and on an excellent green (thanks to Kelvin).
The winners were Bev Morel, Joyce McKinnel, Pete Smith and Peter Nash.
Second were Jamie Wagner, Christine Buchanan, Neil Buchanan and Jeff Chisholm.
Well done to both teams and many thanks to Tim and Jim who organised this event on behalf of the club.
.
MONDAY NIGHT BOWLS.
Under the guiding hand of Bob Colthart, the Monday night bowls commences again on Monday 30th September at 4.30 p.m. and runs on most Mondays as set out in the handbook. All full playing and limited members very welcome. Just turn up a bit before 4.30 and you will be put in a team for play. A very enjoyable and informal event christened the “Monday Night Strugglers” by Bob.
And, finally, best of luck to those club members taking on Fendalton for the Fenwood Duster next Saturday, and to Paul and Joyce McKinnel who will be managing this event.

Good bowling.
