* Congratulations to our brilliant premier women’s team which recently won the Premier Bowls Canterbury Interclub Two Fours event in grand style.
They won all matches, 11 from 14 games, and ended up 10 points clear of the strong opposition, scoring 61 points out of a maximum 70.
2024 has been a stellar year, as our premier women’s team also won the post Christmas sevens from last season.
The two fours representatives were Tania, Fiona, Mary Ann,
* U5s Centre sevens success
* The success of the men’s U5s, especially the triples, 2 firsts and a second. An influx of new U5 members meant a healthy number attempting to be club champion in the singles when compared to the three participants in last year’s U5 and Yr 1 & 2 club championships. Special mention must be made for the great work done by Phil Smith and Jamie Wagner.
EPBC entered a U5 sevens side that competed in the Canterbury Junior Sevens, and won!
This is the first time in recent history that the club has been in a position to enter a side in that competition, which is extremely pleasing. [This is the 8th year of this particular competition and the first time Elmwood Park has entered it!]
We have approximately 20 U5 full members currently at the club, which shows the strength and depth that the club is currently building.
Play Offs.
EP had several teams involved in play offs.
* EP2 were defeated in both games in the men’s double pairs play offs.
* Well done to the U5 pairs team of Steve Cooke and Phil Smith who defeated Woolston Park in a tight tussle, 16 – 13. They progressed to the semi final against Bowls Hornby.
What a game. The U5s EP1 played a close and tense game against Bowls Hornby winning 16 – 13. It was a quality game with both sides playing some superb bowls, none more so than the Bowls Hornby boys who picked up a six with a magnificent shot three ends from the finish to bring the score to EP 14 – 12.
It was bowls at its best, good skills and great camaraderie.
And so to the final.
On a damp and dismal evening some really quality bowls were played by both teams with EP winning 15 – 9. It was closer than that with Club Redcliffs being unlucky in what proved to be the final end. Club Redcliffs were holding two shots with the score at 11 – 9 but they disturbed the jack to EP’s advantage.
* The U5s triples, EP1 and EP3 maintained their high standards set during the interclub rounds by winning both their play off games at Cashmere this morning.
EP1 [Steve Cooke Luke Jury Jane Phil Smith] v Fendalton 18 – 8
EP3 [Lloyd Foster Dale Johnstone Matt Lewis] v Bowls Papanui 3 19 – 13
Semi finals followed. The U5 triples teams of EP1 and EP3 did so well to get to the play offs but sadly they both failed at the final hurdle.
EP3 went down to Bowls Papanui 1 who continued on to win the play offs. EP1 accounted for Bowls Papanui 2 and faced Bowls Papanui 1 in the final. EP1 got away to a good start leading early on 9 – 7 but Bowls Papanui 1 pulled away to eventually win 22 – 9.

Post Section Play:
Expectations were high for a series of good results in the Centre Sevens. Elmwood Park has a history of success in this event but would it carry on?
Women’s premier sevens lost to Burnside. 0 – 2. with the fours unfinished.
Men’s premier sevens won first game against Rangiora 2 – 1, then defeated Burnside 2 – 1 and and went on to play Belfast in the final. They lost 0 – 3 to a very strong and capable Belfast team thus failing to get six in a row.
What a revelation the U5s were. They defeated Bowls Papanui winning singles and fours in the first game, then defeated Halswell 2 – 1 and thus progressed into the final against Rangiora which they won 2 – 0 with the fours drawing. Congratulations guys, a superb effort.
Seddon Jury Jane had a mammoth win in the singles, 21 – 2, and the pairs played well to win relatively comfortably, 17 – 10.

Lawson and Grantham qualify to keep bowls three-peat hopes alive
The Mt Albert duo of Gary Lawson and Tony Grantham have kept a record-breaking three-peat alive after qualifying for post section play in the 2025 Summerset National Championships in Auckland.
The men’s pairs championships attracted 218 combinations with 87 teams qualifying for post section play.
They include Lawson and Grantham who made history last year, when they became the first men’s pairs combination to win back-to-back national titles.
It would also extend a remarkable record for the much-vaunted Lawson, who has won seven national pairs championship titles dating back to his first with Andrew Curtain in 1997.
His other partners in going on to win national honours include Curtain in 1997 and 2008, Dan Delany in 2010, Neville Rodda in 2017, Ali Forsyth in 2018 and Grantham in 2023 and 2024.
Grantham has won also won in 2014 with Mike Nagy.
Other strong combinations to qualify include previous winners Lance Pascoe (Elmwood Park) and Jamie Hill (Mt Albert), who prevailed in 2021, as well as the Mangere duo of Chris Lowe and Jordan King who won the title in 2019.
Other teams with impressive form this week who will challenge for a place at the pointy end of this competition include Commonwealth Games medallist and 2018 world singles champion of champions, Shannon McIlroy and Nelson’s Robbie Reed; Southland’s national player of the year in 2023, Sheldon Bagrie-Howley and Aidan Zittersteijn; plus acclaimed young pairing of Taylor Horn and Jesse Russell from Cambridge.

Congratulations to Lance Pascoe and Jamie Hill who won a tense battle in windy and difficult conditions to win their second national pairs title 19 – 13 against Adam Haywood and Scott Cottrell.
Haywood and Cottrell started strongly, leading 5-3 after six ends. Pascoe and Hill hit the front after picking up six shots on the seventh end, which proved a turning point in the match.
Pascoe and Hill were 16-13 ahead heading into the final end, but had to survive a nervous finish to claim the title.
The duo also won the men’s national pairs title in 2021 when they beat John Carruthers and Mike Bradshaw 18-7 in the final.

The first official interclub tournament of the season, for the Fenwood Duster, EP v Fendalton. EP lost it last year and there was a quiet determination to regain it. This was the 44th time this tournament has been played.
It was a wonderfully fine day although Canterbury’s easterly made itself known during the latter part of the afternoon.
Three bowl triples were played.
Progress score. EP 97 Fen 77 at afternoon tea.

The Pam Rowley four was eliminated first round while the Rowlands four and the Morel four made it through the first round, then guess what? The played each other with the Rowland’s four winning a close one 17 – 13. A big win over Burnside’s Liz Rossiter saw them into the final.

All three teams qualified for post section and will play at Parklands on Friday.
Congratulations to Kelvin Scott, Tony Marshall, Ray Hooper and Ian Rule who won their games and will participate in the final on finals day.
Also an interesting occurrence when a small child wandered on to the rink and shifted some bowls. No problem, bowls replaced, play continued.
At the time of publishing this final had not been played.
MuzzaWeb was interested to see a composite team entered???????
Although the page in the Centre handbook on O60 events makes it clear that O60 entries can be composite it was a decision made by the Bowls Canty Review Panel and Board and against EP’s vote on the review panel.
EP remains strongly against this and it will likely result in four men cherry picking a top team as occurs in the nationals.
MuzzaWeb and President Neil are vehemently opposed to this practice in Centre events.
Apparently there was a lot of critical comment about this at Parklands where our teams did well.
The Final:
High drama in the O60 fours final. Kelvin Sc0tt, Tony Marshall, Ray Hooper and Ian Rule, who played another delayed event, won the title 20 – 19 against a very strong Belfast four skipped by Mark Schrader.
EP got away to a strong start and led by 14 – 2. Then they appeared to lose their way and with three ends to go they were down 14 – 19. A 1, on a measure, then a 2 and a 3 on the final end saw them emerge winners.
Congratulations guys, a great finish to the year.

Can you believe it? Five titles.
What a day. Eight sets of Elmwood Park players participated, and we came home with five titles.
Well done teams, you have done EP proud.
And tucked away in the midst of all that was the information that Paul McKinnel won his 5th Canterbury title, with his pairs win, and Mary Ann Johnstone gained her 15th Canterbury title. Congratulations to those two. Pam Phair gained her 11th Canterbury title. A great and courageous effort as she was unwell and played through the pain barrier and still managed to deliver quality bowls. Well done.

Mixed Pairs:
The event was programmed or April 5 but the delayed mixed pairs EP representatives Tania Woodham and Steve Bowden were eliminated by eventual finalists Burnside, 5 – 14, in the second round on May 10. Seemed an extraordinary long delay.
13 – 4 – 25 Finals Day:
Woolston Park hosted the champion of champions finals; EP had four teams participating.
The singles had two losses, oh so close, with Phil Smith in the Yr 1&2 men’s singles going down 19 – 21 and Mandy Boyd losing the women’s singles 20 – 21.
Well done to our two champion fours teams who both registered wins, the men’s four; Gary Lawson, Kelvin Scott, Liam Eathorne and Nathan Glasson who defeated Bowls Hornby 27 – 11, and the women’s four; Mandy Boyd, Bev Morel, Christine Buchanan and Tania Woodham who defeated Club Redcliffs 18 – 12.
12 – 4 – 25 The women’s pairs team of Kim Rowlands and Fiona Frew lost their semi to a well-performed Belfast pair, 13 – 21.
The men’s fours and Phil Smith won their semis by default.

Comments and Opinions.
* Disappointing only two teams contested the new bowls3five idea promoted by Bowls Canterbury. Did EP miss a glorious opportunity to have this competition as an integral part of its programme and perhaps make a fun day out of it?
* AC8s had the final four games withdrawn due to illness and injuries. Disappointing. Questions need to be asked to ascertain the reasons here. With the number of changes to originally named teams and the frantic chases for people to play seems to suggest that maybe too many teams were entered in the first place.
* The so called Friday club day. Small attendances throughout but really fell away at the season’s end.
* Disappointing that the men’s triples was won on a default.
* The lack of a regular tournament. Shouldn’t we have one? MuzzaWeb doesn’t believe 3 bowl triples is the answer. No idea what the answer is but some creative thinking is probably required.
* After an error MuzzaWeb was pleased to see that the Manning Cup was entered in interclub after Christmas. Disappointed this never eventuated.
* MuzzaWeb is still not a fan of the singles one life system.
* In the club championships MuzzaWeb believes stricter time schedules should be made and enforced.
* Muzzaweb would like to praise the U5 men who breathed life into proceedings and appear to be the future of the club. They had great success and special mention needs to be made of their mentors, Jamie Wagner and especially Uncle Phil Smith.
