Double world bowls champion Gary Lawson and his New Zealand four teammates have ended their dispute with Bowls New Zealand, which has dragged on since they were found guilty of throwing an end during an Asia-Pacific championship match in Malaysia.
However, a joint statement yesterday said the parties had reached an agreement after mediation.
The players had withdrawn their appeals to the Sports Tribunal and accepted the BNZ judicial committee’s decision. In turn, BNZ had agreed to waive the fines imposed by the judicial committee on all the players.
Lawson, who skipped the four, said it had been a difficult time for BNZ and the players, but it was time to move on from the matter.
“The decisions and findings of the BNZ judicial committee are accepted. We accept that our actions were contrary to the rules,” he said.
BNZ said Hill, Sincock and McIlroy would be considered for selection to the national team for international events this year, including the Commonwealth Games.

Well done to the fours team of Brian Walsh, Allan Reid, Murray Scott and Mick Tarling who made the last four of the champion of champion fours held at the Centre green.
In the first game they beat Allenton on an extra end in a real Houdini act. Dropping a five on the fourteenth end they clawed back to 14 – 14 at the completion of the sixteenth end thanks in part to a brilliant Brian Walsh shot the put the kitty in the ditch. Two shots on the extra end made for a 16 – 14 win.
The next game against Elmwood was a 10 – 17 defeat but real credit has to be paid to the Elmwood skip, Neil Johnstone, who played so well.
Elmwood skip, Neil Johnson, the difference between the two teams, playing another superb draw shot.
The St. Albans-Merivale team represented the club very well. Well done guys!!

After SAM holding the Pennant for the previous two years, it was regained by Fendalton with a resounding 74 – 50 win.
Only four teams were fielded by each club and it was played as a progressive format.
It is suggested that next season it be played on the first Monday after the completion of the Edwards Cup and Bernie Bigg Trophy and be played as a mixed event.

This was the third time St. Albans-Merivale and Parklands have played this tournament, the first in 2012 following the season that Parklands shared our facilities following the earthquakes. This was a positive experience for the St. Albans-Merivale Bowling Club and I’m sure it would have dearly loved to have kept the Parklands players to build up numbers and add some quality bowlers to its ranks.
It was a resounding win to St. Albans-Merivale, 159 – 103. It was St. Albans-Merivale’s first win.
The format was three games of six ends; at the completion of the six ends both clubs moved in different directions and the following six ends were played. Such an enjoyable format made more interesting by a powerplay on the third end of the final game.
After the games and socializing a bbq meal was enjoyed by all. It was a great day. MuzzaWeb hopes it continues and it becomes part of an important tradition between the two clubs.

This was the first time the shield was played for by the newly amalgamated club.

A cloud was descending, not only on the bowling world, but on all sports. The non contact considerations were coming out quickly and changing every hour. A sad time for sports in general.
“There is presently no reason people should stop doing their daily sport and physical activities as they normally would, and we encourage our members to remain as fit and healthy as they can, and bowling is a great option.” From the BNZ website.

Congratulations to Jonathan Flint who defeated Burnside’s Richard Hocking in the Centre singles final 21 – 19 at Halswell.
It was a tense final with quality bowls played by both men.
I am delighted to let club members know that on Saturday, Jonathan Flint beat Richard Hocking of Burnside to win, for the second time, the Canterbury Centre Singles. It was good to see great club support for Jonathan at the Halswell green in what proved to be an epic match. Jonathan, playing great bowls, got out to a commanding lead only for his opponent to then come back to the extent that he actually led 18-17 at one point. Some brilliant final ends followed before Flinty prevailed. [Neil Johnstone’s excellent account.]
